4 Signs That You Need a New Clutch

If you drive a manual transmission car then you are well aware of the clutch pedal. The clutch controls the spin of the flywheel and disengage the wheels from then engine while it is still running. In simpler terms, the clutch lets you change gears.
Because of the friction crated by the clutch it can become worn down and won’t work efficiently. Your car will tell you when your clutch is on its way out and should be replaced. Ignoring these signs could result in costly damage down the line.

Here are a few of the warning signs that your clutch is due an upgrade.

Burning Smell

A clear sign that something is wrong with your clutch is if you begin to notice a burning smell as you shift gears. This is most likely due to the clutch overheating and the plate wearing thin. If left unchecked this can cause damage to other elements of your transmission and engine. However, if you regularly drive in heavy traffic you may notice this burning smell more often but it does not necessarily mean you need a replacement right away.

Slipping Clutch

A worn clutch might show signs of slipping in situations when the engine has to work more, like overtaking a car on a steep incline. A slipping clutch is when the car will unexpectedly slip out of gear, even without you doing anything. The longer this goes on, the more the clutch wears down and will need to be replaced.

Sticky or Sensitive Clutch Pedal

Another sign that something is amiss with your clutch is if the pedal suddenly becomes very difficult to push down on. This is known as a sticky clutch. If it takes a lot of pressure to engage the clutch then there is possibly a problem with the hydraulic system of the clutch.
An over sensitive clutch pedal is also a cause for concern. If the biting point of your clutch or if it takes less pressure than normal to push down on the pedal then you should bring your car to be checked over by a qualified mechanic.

Engine Smoke

Smoke coming from your engine is never a good sign. And smoke, combined with a burning smell is a clear indicator that your clutch needs to be replaced. The smoke is normally caused by the clutch system overheating,. You may also hear loud screeching noises when you press on the clutch pedal.
